What the 1st house governs

The 1st house is the starting point of the whole natal chart. Its cusp is called the Ascendant, and it is the point from which the houses are counted. This is the field of the self in the most direct sense: who a person is, how they enter the world, and how they present themselves to others.

The 1st house covers appearance, physical build, bearing, and the first impression a person makes. It is the "mask" through which we meet life - not a false one, but the natural form in which we express ourselves. It also takes in temperament, vitality, and a person's general approach to anything new: how they begin, react, and announce themselves.

As an angular house, the 1st is among the strongest and most visible in the chart. Planets that fall here color a person's whole manner and character vividly.

The 1st house in the natal chart

The sign on the cusp of the 1st house (the Ascendant) and any planets within it show how a person appears to the world and how they begin any undertaking. This does not necessarily match the inner self, which the Sun describes: the Ascendant is more the outward style, the part others see first.

A planet placed in the 1st house strongly shapes a person's manner and the first impression they give. Mars here, for instance, adds drive and energy to the presentation; Saturn adds reserve and seriousness. An empty house is not a weakness: the theme of the self is then read through the sign on the cusp and its ruler.

The 1st house forms an axis with the 7th house: the contrast of "self and other," of identity and partnership. One pole describes the person themselves, the other the people they are drawn to and choose as close companions.

The sign and planet of the 1st house

The natural sign of the 1st house is Aries, and its natural ruler is Mars. The link is fitting: Aries opens the zodiac just as the 1st house opens the chart, and Mars governs initiative and self-assertion.

It is important not to confuse the natural sign of the house with the sign on its cusp in a given chart: each person has their own sign on the Ascendant. The natural correspondence sets only the general meaning of the house; for the character of a particular sign, see its own page.
